Ducks, Jerseys and Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Anyone that knows me knows that I am a die hard fan of the Oregon Ducks college football program.
This is in part due to my being born in Oregon and my undying affection for Nike ever since growing up in Portland, Oregon from 1986-1992 when Nike burst onto the scene due in large part to a guy named Michael Jordan.
Fast forward a few years and Oregon Ducks football, the alma mater of Nike's founder Phil Knight, starts to gain national attention in part because of their talent, fast paced offense and because they started wearing unique jerseys. Before Oregon, you had an away jersey and a home jersey. Simple. Then Nike and Oregon changed the game.
Now Oregon has something unique every week and they’ve been doing it for 2 decades. It started with some different colors and evolved into completely different looks for every game including different helmet designs and colors.
But, every October they bring a different flair in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. They have used bold pink numbers as well as bold pink helmets. This year they did something different for breast cancer awareness month and developed an entirely different theme. Their head coach’s wife Sauphia is center stage in the design for this year's version and is a cancer survivor.
Things like this or the NFL’s focus on Crucial Catch during the month of October bring about awareness, financial contribution and lead to important solutions for issues like cancer. All of this is part of our social economy that we live in and that we can make meaningful change with our money.
Check out this article to see the jerseys and learn more about their design and meaning.
